  • Profile Photo / Picture Creative Method & Ideas DIY (online dating, tinder, badoo, okcupid etc.)

    Shoot ideas:
-Turn on laptop webcam and video record yourself. Find a decent frame and screen capture it.
-Same idea but use camera instead. For visual feedback, put a mirror behind camera to see display.
-Same idea but hold camera pointing it into a large mirror.

    Post processing ideas:
    -Crop creatively.
    -Rotate pic sideways.
-Mono color shift or B&W or filters.
-Draw cat ears etc. in ms paint.
-Some websites can apply filters to pics online.

    Testing ideas:
-Run a 2nd account for crash testing things.
    -Use picture rating web sites.

    Please contribute more creative/artistic ideas!

    Some general advice:
Some points from Cocporn's iGNITE e-book:
-Photogenic, is a skill you can learn.
-Post processing - learn how to.
    -Branded items in picture.
-Fake candid - gaze sideways, away from camera.
-Color coordinated picture. (Other ways to up 'style'?)
    -Makeup/mascara/eyeliner.
-Sucking in cheeks to emphasize face shape. (Pout?)

As usual from you, lots of ideas and advice, parts of it very vague. And nothing about field testing of the material.

i used to have a 3 year old phone samsong avant, so obviously i thought i was uglier than what i really was... So i hired based on community advice, a professional photographer, the pics were weak and again i felt i was uglier than i was...

then some of my girls took pics with iphone (5 or 6 plus) and i finally stop being cheap and got me a samsong s8 and took selfies... (I went from a perseption 6 to 8 )...

my point is that the profesional photography advice is mehhhh

the advice of taking pics (as long as a GOOD PHONE) works....Over professional, my take... and in my case...

Totally agree. Lol I put my newest phone on charge 1hr ago, just to test it for photo. (Seems I love my old phone too much, so Its bee sitting in box for months..)
Also, pro shots send the wrong 'message' imho.

      I have an entry-level, semi-pro FujiFilm camera with a nice 1.4 f-stop.

A couple of buddies and I went to a bar and were passing around the camera to take advantage of it's low-light capabilities.

      The advantages of this are:

      -natural light
      -candid moments
      -social environment

Here's a candid shot of me at the bar. Sorry I had to remove my pretty face. Also, what's with the image sizes? I can't seem to upload or embed the original size. Only these shitty thumbnails.

      Try it sometime.

"Donít hold camera too close either ó your face will start to look bulbous."

This is why mirror selfies are better! Arms length is TOO SHORT, and will make the middle of your face expand like a balloon... (may work if you have a super tiny nose, but normal noses will look troll-sized, similar to your reflection on back of spoon.)

Found the quote in this selfie guide, which has very good instructions on light, angle etc.: https://medium.com/@aanand/take-bett...s-26089b2b3e4e

Hmmm maybe its your camera. iPhones should be fine. I've gotten my most effective selfies pointing the phone at myself like this, going back to the 4s. Mirror adds a bit a cheese factor ime.

Thanks for input and examples! Maybe Iphone has a built in anti bulge filter?
Normally, close-up kinda gives you more nose and less jaw.. just compare pic 1 and the better distanced pic 3.
(Lol also note that Rob has a lot of jaw and a tiny nose to begin with, so it actually works in his favor to a degree...)

Ok, vid recording w/phone into mirror has some GREAT advantages over just taking a photo!!
-Light is ZERO issue. You can pretty much shoot in the dark lol.
-No need to hold perfectly still.
-Being so much easier to do, leads to more relaxed vibe in pics.

The main benefit of selfies is the fact that you can take however many pictures you need, fine tuning your absolute best angle and expression. It does makes sense that a running a video and then screen shotting the best frame can help produce the best results.

I too think the professional photo advice is a bit overkill - especially to advanced guys.
Every picture app has a photoshop-like feature these days, so there's no point really

            Some tips:
            - make sure you download a proper app to your phone's camera, especially if you're using Android. The the built-in software is crap and don't take full advantage of the lenses, FOV, aperture size, etc
            - mirror selfies are 50-50...it depends a lot on the lightning and the set-up (IMHO bathroom mirrors usually suck, gym mirrors are better).

Yeah my skin hates bathroom lighting.
GYM mirror is a TREMENDOUS idea, now that I think about it! Very nice x5!!

If you hang out with chicks youíll notice they do a few things to get good photos...

            - take a shot ton of photos (even outside of selfies they take like 100s of photos with a group to get one good one)
            - worry a lot about lighting
            - worry about angles
            - take a shit ton of photos

basically this is one area that is a true numbers game (see professional shoots where they take 1000s or essentially the same photo to get a single final print)

I donít do any online stuff really and photograph terribly so thatís all I got.

Good points. This is probably where vid-recording shows its best advantage (you are basically taking 30(?) shots pr second)

50mm prime lens. Use good lighting indoor or golden hour outdoor. Mostly donít be posing. Pics should look candid. Social proof is a must. Men and women. Just donít be losing with arm around girl looking into lens like sheís your girlfriend. Youíll see the one I cropped out hot chick but you can still see her massive boobs. The table pic there are four girls looking at me. Iím not looking at camera. Staged that pic with four random girls in a coffee shop. And yes. The more pics you take the better. Also notice the aesthetic of my bio. Girls love that shit and they love emojis.
